Sven B. Schreiber (sbs) Yesterday, I stumbled over "Glow In The Dark" in my collection - a magnificent three-track EP, only recently published by Rachel Rose Mitchell. So I decided to peek into her back-catalog, and spotted "Where's Your Wonderland?", recorded back in 2012 as Rachel Macwirter, which probably is her real name. It's an amazing album, because it documents the musical beginnings of a gifted singer-songwriter and professional composer, which are not so humble whatsoever. Although the recordings are produced on reportedly simple equipment, they sound remarkably well, and generally already expose Rachel Rose Mitchell's typical elaborate art rock style of writing and arranging. Favorite track: A Thousand Angels.

Hey Alice 04:20
Hey Alice, Where's your wonderland Now that you're back on Earth? How does it look Now you've left it behind And crossed the stepping stones? Hey Alice, Is it greener here? Or does it seem like dirt? Does it feel the same? Can you say that you Are happy to be home? The rabbit Seems to call your name. You're late! So it's time to move. Oh Alice, You know it's your fate. Tick, Tock, No time to lose. Did the mushrooms make you grow? Did the flowers say hello? Would Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee Care to sing a song for me? Did you like your Unbirthday? Did the Cheshire Cat smile you way? Can you tell a raven from a writing desk? Was the Hatter's tea the best? Did you do as the Queen asked? Did you see through the looking glass? Hey Alice, Do you want to play? The Queen's great! (Or so it's been said.) Hey Alice, Can you play croquet? If you're good, you can keep your head! Hey Alice, Are you here or there Or somewhere in between? Hey Alice, Would you ever dare To go back through where you've been? Hey Alice, Time is running short! This can't take too long. Make a choice now. On which side of the door Do you feel you belong? The rabbit Seems to call your name. You're late! So it's time to move. Oh Alice, You know it's your fate. Tick, Tock, No time to lose! The rabbit Seems to call your name. You're late! So it's time to move. Oh Alice, You know it's your fate. Tick, Tock, No time to lose!

They're calling out for us, calling out for our surrender. We can show them all that's not how we're going to end it. Up against the wall is where we stand our ground while the fires fly and crackle all around. There's seconds left to burn before the final dawn. We can take the world and they can't take us down. We'll fight until the end and soar above it all. United we are strong. As one we cannot fall and we will prove ourselves. Together we stand tall. The stars have disappeared and we're fighting in the daylight. Should have lost by now. We'll still be here by night. The fires have burned out and left us safe inside our fortress that we built with our own hands and our own lives. There's seconds left to burn before the final dawn. We can take the world and they can't take us down. We'll fight until the end and soar above it all. United we are strong. As one we cannot fall and we will prove ourselves. Together we stand tall. They didn't think we'd do it but we're more than what they say. If we were all so worthless we would not be here today. We're just as good as anyone. Why should we be worse? We're not the ones to give up and we won't bear their curse. We can take the world and they can't take us down. We'll fight until the end and soar above it all. United we are strong. As one we cannot fall and we will prove ourselves. Together we stand tall.

Oh what an honour, the odds have smiled on me Chosen for my chance for fame Oh what an honour, I know the world will see Though I never will see them Don't miss what's next up on your TV We're interviewing our interviewees We are the iron children, your magnifying glass Try to be magnets for the cameras We are the iron children, built strong to entertain The glorious players in your games The players in your games They make us beautiful, they make us bright You give us sparkle, you lend us your spotlight You give us a world where everyone knows our name You give us a week and nothing again Stay tuned for primetime on your tv This is not primetime. This is tragedy We are the iron children, your magnifying glass Try to be magnets for the cameras We are the iron children, built strong to entertain The glorious players in your games The players in your games This is the venue, now's the time You had mercy enough not to make us learn our lines The clock is tick-tocking, the focus is on us Reality, not TV. It's victory or bust I heard the cannon, what do you care? I heard his cannon, but where's his fanfare? We are the iron children, your magnifying glass Try to be magnets for your cameras We are the iron children, built strong to entertain But it's all lies, isn't it? We are not iron children, our shields are shattered glass Stuck in a playground for your camera There are no iron children, we are your famous shame We hope you enjoy our remains There are no iron children, we are your famous shame I hope you never clean our stain. I know you'll never clean our stain.

Into Winter 04:37
I saw you standing there I had to stop and stare I saw your heart break And as the wind passed by I couldn't catch your eye I saw your heart break And I Couldn't bear to see you cry And I Fall into winter If you see the way Tell me and we'll fly away To someplace we can always stay Someplace where we'll never break One day we will see the sky Spanning over oceans wide Until then you can try To give me a reason not to cry You blinked the tears away And said you'd been betrayed Too much for you to take You'd fought so many years But your head wasn't clear Too much for you to take And I Know seasons change but never die And I Fall into winter If you see the way Tell me and we'll fly away To someplace we can always stay Someplace where we'll never break One day we will see the sky Spanning over oceans wide Until then you can try To give me a reason not to cry

With Me Now 04:38
If I act, then you won't see the girl behind the smile You can't see the child that's hiding in her eyes You will only see the way she moves, such poise and style It's almost like she's confidence personified It's like she showers her light on everyone for miles It's easy just to sit and watch her shine But she's scared and looking deeper is not so worthwhile There's more that hides within than you can analyse Part of me says this is where I want to be I've never been so far away from safe I'm telling you, I'll handle all this easily Why don't you stay beside me, just in case? I am standing on my own two feet So hear me now I don't know what I am I am a nightmare I'm reaching out to you Tell me you're there I hate to see your face I need you, darling If I reach into the sky What will the stars bring Will they fall on me Or pull me up from on the ground? Who's with me now? Somehow it doesn't feel like I am up this high But I think I can see my house from here I can do this, I'm sure you can see it in my eyes I'm here to prove I won't just disappear I am real, I am in your arms So look at me I don't know what I am I am a nightmare I'm reaching out to you Tell me you're there I hate to see your face I need you, darling If I reach into the sky What will the stars bring? Will they fall on me? Or pull me up from on the ground? If I should lose my way, Would you help to guide me back down? Who's with me now? I never imagined I would end up here But maybe I've been right here all along I refuse to hide from what I am I'm terrified. I understand. Now is not the time for me to close my eyes .

Mockingjay 04:29
Do you know what it's like to be unable to believe your ears? To hear a name you can't bear to hear? Do you know what it's like to willingly throw your life away in the hope that someone else will see another day? Do you know that I'll never be the same? Didn't mean to change the world, only wanted to save you. Though I know that I'm only one girl, couldn't let them take you. So just keep shining - I promise to be your Mockingjay. Do you know what it's like to be in a forest built on bones and know they're watching you back at home? Do you know what it's like to scream out on the off chance that someone will hear your voice in the distance? Do you know if there's a way out for us? Do you know if there's a way out at all? Didn't mean to change the world, only wanted to save you. Though I know that I'm only one girl, couldn't let them take you. This was no revolution - I just wasn't leaving alone. What happened after, there's no way I could have known. So just keep shining - I promise to be your Mockingjay. I Never meant to be, never meant to be, never meant to be a hero. I Never meant to be a hero. A herooooo~ Didn't mean to change the world, only wanted to save you. Though I know that I'm only one girl, couldn't let them take you. Didn't mean to change the world, only wanted to save you. Though I know that I'm only one girl, couldn't let them take you. This was no revolution, I just wasn't leaving alone. What happened after, there's no way I could've known. So just keep shining. I will try to make it all okay. So just keep shining - I promise to be your Mockingjay.

Roses have faded from red to grey. Smiling faces scared away. Leafless trees no longer sway. Dust and cinders fill the air. Hollow people stop to stare. Forests all are dead and bare. Zephyrs blow through tattered hair. Lay your head down and close your eyes. Shut out the world, sing a lullaby. You could be dreaming so say goodbye. And fall to your sleeping world. Ashes of what used to be fly and fall. Lost and free. Ruins, far as can be seen. Burdened eyes have lost their gleam. Lay your head down and close your eyes. Shut out the world, sing a lullaby. You could be dreaming so say goodbye. And fall to your sleeping world. Cover your ears and settle down. Clear your head of what's going around. You can fight all you like with nothing to gain. Or slip to a world of sweet refrain. Lay your head down and close your eyes. Shut out the world, sing a lullaby. You could be dreaming so say goodbye. And fall to your sleeping world.

Shadows can really be a girl's best friend Diamonds can't hide you. Can't fight or defend. Shadows can prove to be your saving grace When staying alive means concealing your face Brains beat out brawn. That's common sense. Let them compete with their common violence. Slinking unseen garners minimal damage So slip by unnoticed as long as you'll manage When the time comes you dart to the dark Two steps ahead. Too clever by half. Hiding in plain sight may be the way It'll be worth it if it helps you stay Center stage refuge is not what they'd expect Amazing, the things that they never detect They say finding food here's a valuable skill Resources are nothing if you've learned to steal Somehow for some reason, you start to fall This nothing will beat you. This nothing at all. When the time comes you dart to the dark. Two steps ahread. Too clever by half.

Another one gone today. It happens all the time, now. Nobody's surprised now. They're dropping like they're flies now. But don't you find it disconcerting? After all, knowing what you've done, you're likely to be hurting. Watch out, you're being watched now as you skulk along the street There was once a time when you controlled the end you'd meet Depending on the mistakes etched into your yesterday It's a matter of time 'til it's time for you to pay Tell me, won't you, what's your name? Hey, why won't you show your face? There's a reason, there's a rhyme and in the back of your mind You know if you're in danger from the days you left behind You can run and you can hide and you can lock yourself inside There's nothing you can do once you have been identified. Watch out, you're being watched now as you skulk along the street You are not in control of the end you're going to meet Somebody remembers your misdeeds of yesterday Involuntary atonement is just forty seconds away You could try to win this game You won't get far -- it's too late Walking through the streets like any one of us Deliberately mundane so as not to cause a fuss On your trains, your streets, your roads, with you on the bus Raining judgement, not from above, but more like from next door. Watch out, you're being watched now as you skulk along the street You are not in control of the end you're going to meet Somebody remembers your misdeeds of yesterday Involuntary atonement is just forty seconds away Watch out, you're being watched now in the plans for your defeat There is nothing left but to fall down from on your feet The last thing you ever know will take your breath away You look into a pair of eyes that almost seem to say You're nothing more than a name and a face Scrawled onto a notebook's page

Try and redeem yourself this time. Try and repeat your lies. Hide the truth behind your smile, hide the deceit in your eyes. Go on, I dare you, try it. I won't be fooled again by your innocent disguise, your little smiles, your stupid lies. I won't be fooled again. I won't be fooled again by your innocent disguise, your little smiles, your stupid lies. I won't be fooled again. You always come back and say you can change, but you're still the same. Isn't that strange? Hide the truth behind your smile, hide the deceit in your eyes. Hide the proof of what you did. It's your fault that what you had has died. I won't be fooled again by your innocent disguise, your little smiles, your stupid lies. I won't be fooled again. I won't be fooled again by your innocent disguise, your little smiles, your stupid lies. I won't be fooled again. Hearing this might be hard but it's what you have to do. I hope that you will understand that the blame all rests with you. I won't be fooled again by your innocent disguise, your little smiles, your stupid lies. I won't be fooled again. I won't be fooled again by your innocent disguise, your little smiles, your stupid lies. I won't be fooled again. I won't be fooled again by your innocent disguise, your little smiles, your stupid lies. I won't be fooled again.

This isn't what I expected. No, not even close. Did no one think to give me a warning? Yes, of course I look like I've just seen a ghost. That's just the realisation dawning. Here in this shaded room I think to myself Where has this trail got me going? I'm told it was made for me, made for no one else. I'm told the pressure isn't showing. We're building up to the count down And every eye turns my way Technically, I could back down But what am I supposed to say? A thousand angels are coming to get me A thousand voices are haunting my sleep There's no escaping this fight; they control it I try to run. Though I hide, I am seen. I've made it this far and I can't believe it's true It's hard to imagine what I've done I know it gets harder but I will see this through Because I know I must not run And though I'm dangerously hanging by a thread I will still find a pathway home There may not always be someone by my side But I'm told that I am not alone I feel like I'm coming around I feel like I can face these days But still I faintly hear the sounds And they won't go away A thousand angels are coming to get me A thousand voices are haunting my sleep There's no escaping this fight; they control it I try to run. Though I hide, I am seen. A thousand angels are coming to get me A thousand voices are haunting my sleep There's no escaping this fight; they control it I try to run. Though I hide, I am seen. A thousand angels are hijacking my world A thousand eyes watch as I start to scream And every angel will fight for the same end A thousand angels are coming for me A thousand angels are hijacking my world A thousand eyes watch as I start to scream And every angel will fight for the same end A thousand angels are coming for me (On and on and on they go) A thousand angels are coming to get me (They're starting to surround) A thousand voices are haunting my sleep (On and on and on they go) There's no escaping this fight; they control it (What's hidden underground) I try to run. Though I hide, I am seen. (On and on and on They go) A thousand angels are hijacking my world (They're starting to surround) A thousand eyes watch as I start to scream (On and on and on They go) And every angel will fight for the same end (What we hide underground) A thousand angels are coming for me A thousand angels are coming to get me A thousand angels are coming for me A thousand angels are coming to get me A thousand angels are coming for me

Nightingale 03:26
You were never meant for this Clutching straws of sanity Faking lies to blur your eyes They break you for their vanity Don't turn around Break away on your own Don't give in now You can survive alone Take your leave from this world that has caused you such pain Fly away, nightingale, fly away Fly away, nightingale, fly away Isolated just for fun Forced into your solitude You don't have to answer them Don't obey their every mood Don't turn around Break away on your own Take your leave from this world that has caused you such pain Fly away, nightingale, fly away Flee from the darkness, escape from the rain Fly away, nightingale, fly away Fly away, nightingale, fly away Fly away, nightingale, fly away Fly away, nightingale, fly away Free yourself now Of torment and hurt Never again To be thrown in the dirt Face your fears now And soon you will see Right from the start You were meant to be free Take your leave from this world that has caused you such pain Fly away, nightingale, fly away Flee from the darkness, escape from the rain Fly away, nightingale, fly away Fly away, nightingale, fly away

about

As well as the twelve tracks you can hear here, if you buy this album, you'll also get backing tracks to each song for free!

So this is the first album I've recorded and I guess that's rather obvious. With the exception of the backing vocals on Fall To Sleep, everything here was recorded and made somewhat presentable on my laptop in my bedroom. At least I have a desk nowadays and am not recording on my bed!
